Now I want to add this: I found a forum that told me to go to Start, then right click Computer, select properties, then Advanced System Settings, then Advanced top selection and select performance settings, and then select Adjust for best performance. Studio 18 made every disk flawlessly with all the directories working properly.
Studio 18 did not crash once after the change. There are about 20 different settings that were changed from being selected to not selected and now I will try to find out which of these caused all the problems. Maybe someone out there already knows and if you do please let me know since I am not sure I want to keep my computer looking and working this way all the time or going back and forth with these settings.

Trying to learn via trial and error is difficult. For example, the symbol for "Cut" is not a pair of scissors. Every other software system in the galaxy uses a pair of scissors as the "cut" symbol, but not this one. Instead, the writers of this software use a rectangle and expect you to guess that it represents a razor blade. You could spend hours trying to find the scissors symbol and you might never figure out that the "rectangle" was a play-pretend razor blade.
It sure does not look like a razor blade. That is not an isolated problem; that's how non-intuitive this software is. The Pinnacle experience achieves total nadir when the user finds that he has been stiffed with thirty days of "free training" from Back Lot Studios. The Back Lot logo pops up instead of a training manual.
This is a big deal because BLS doesn't know boilerplate from fried eggs. If you asked these clowns what time it was, they would tell you how to build a watch. Finally, there is some help on YouTube, but there is no coherent, "start with the basics course" for PS 18 Ultimate. I gave this software two stars because I think of it as "number two".
They didn't; so, I did. Here is what happened. They sent me a notice that an update was available for PS I downloaded it and found that they had included a free manual with their update! They didn't apologize or anything like that, they just sneaked it in.
Their user's manual is a free download, but it doesn't have an icon. That means it doesn't show up when I load up. The best thing about this experienced is that I'm totally pleased that my slash and burn techniques worked with these creeps. Reviews on Amazon are read and they carry a lot of weight. Power to the purchaser! I got this to review through the Amazon Vine program. That being said I am a newbie to using video editing software. Aside from that I don't have much experience with different video editing software.
I mainly got this to edit my videos for my book blog that I post to youtube. I recorded video in HD on my Note 3, uploaded to youtube, and then downloaded onto my desktop to use with this software. The first problem I ran into is that this program is quite the hog.
I have the recommended system requirements, aside from a dedicated video card I have an on board video card on my Vizio CA I definitely recommending getting a good dedicated video card if you are going to run this software. Pretty much whenever I did any video processing within this software all other processes stopped on my computer and I basically had to leave the desktop and do something else for 20 minutes.
It was very painful. Assuming you do have the recommended dedicated video card This software had everything I could imagine or want to do with videos at the level I am working at. I was able to add title screens, insert music, do nice transitions, do static image overlays over the video, and splice together video clips easily. Doing voice overs was also very easy. The only issue I had is that I could not get the sound to sync properly with one of the videos I was working on.
The download to my PC was fine but once it was loaded into Pinnacle 18 the sound was faster than the visual. I had the right frame rate set make sure you have that set in your project settings before importing the video. My husband who works with this kind of thing a lot more than I do and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was going on and were never able to completely fix it.
The above being said you can split out the video and the audio and I was able to manually adjust the audio rate so that it was synced better with the video. So some of the issues I was having was probably do to me learning how to use all the tools provided properly.
Most of the tools are pretty easy to pick and learn, the location of things was fairly intuitive and it all seemed pretty easy to use. I am planning on upgrading my desktop soon, I will try and update with how the software works after that.
Overall though I would definitely recommend it. This software did everything I needed. It was a bit of a memory hog though, so I recommend only using it with a dedicated video card. The Pinnacle series has always sought to be the "premium" of the Corel family. Lots of features, extras, and massive platform to do almost any home or semi-pro project.
The problems with previous Pinnacle is the lack of multithread and 64 bit integration, and choppy rendering during the editing process. The Pinnacle 18 has 64 bit architecture and utilizes your computer's juice to it's fullest potential. Installation - Took far too long. A non-factor, but something worth noting. Interface- Intuitive, easy to drag and drop, cut, selecting frames. Editing - Drag and drop, snip snip, import video. Relatively easy to pick up.
Not being able to just drag a video from the outside is annoying. I have to import the video into the Pinnacle ecosystem before playing with it. The editing tool for video is superb. Live Screen Capture - Simply a win. No more searching for that right screen capture software. Integrated, easy to use, spectacular convenience. What I love is that recording both the video and audio program sounds is seamless.
Not many recording programs provide this feature. Usually, you would need to use an external recording device to overlay any audio. Features and extras - My golly. Royalty free soundtracks, endless list of transitions and effects, countless plugins. I personally don't need them all, but you will probably find a diamond in the bucket.
It can be quite a headache to surf through all those transitions and effects. Look through them all thoroughly a couple times, bookmark your favorites, and save yourself time in your video editing regime. The Pinnacle Studio 18 jumped leaps in and bounds and showed promise with the revamped 64 bit architecture and usual plethora of features. It is far from perfect, but it does give you all the tools for home or semi-pro production.
If you want to cut the crap plugins, extras , and you do like the Pinnacle Studio's ease of use, already solid collection of transitions and effects, go with the Pinnacle regular or plus versions. To do this, simply click on the folder icon when exporting files. Last year, I built a fast PC quad core 3. The PC rocked video production using Sony Vegas. Then I added a Dell inch monitor, with x pixel resolution, and the video card could not handle the p output on the inch monitor.
Most users will not use most of these, unless they are avid video producers. Installation was fast and painless at first, with easy online registration, and the requirement to enter two serial numbers one for Pinnacle and one for iZotope Music and Speech Cleaner. The first time I tried to start a new movie project, I was asked to update the software, and did so, taking about 5 minutes with broadband.
I started out without viewing any video tutorials many are available on YouTube or reading any software directions. In Project Settings, I selected p, at 30 frames per second, which matches the video I planned to import. I imported a number of video tracks, edited the start and stop points trimming , and placed them in the timeline where your audio, video, titles, special effects, and transitions go.
I added a basic title, and inserted a basic fade transition for the title. Imported a royalty-free audio track, then added a second track. Exported the 4-minute clip at p resolution as a MPEG4 file, which took less than 5 minutes not much rendering time there. The video played flawlessly using QuickTime. For the very reasonable price, this is very capable video editing software.
It has a bit of a learning curve, and I did resort to watching the first couple of minutes of a basic video editing software on YouTube, which taught me about the Navigation pane the key to Navigation, and at the left side, rather than the more obvious top.
If you have any video editing experience, and a reasonably fast computer with a decent video card, this software should work well for amateurs! It has many effects and many transitions. For the beginner to advanced non-professional, this software rocks! Highly recommended if you want powerful video editing software that does not cost a lot.
You will need to invest a few hours learning the interface, but it will be well-worth it! I have had many versions of Pinnacle Studio over the years and haven't liked it much since they jettisoned the original Studio and converted Avid Studio to take it's place. It you are running the 64 bit version some of your old content won't work with this version. Support for 4K video editing has been added.
Real performance improvements are yet to be seen, theoretically 64 bit should be faster, but I've not found 64 bit software versions to knock my socks off in performance improvement. We still have the same pokey media management module with it's glacial updating process. Honestly if you're happy with version 17 I don't see a compelling reason for you to upgrade. The included training is not a DVD as included in past versions, but rather a 45 day access to online training which you'll have to subscribe to.
I remember when this version of the software came with extras such as a green screen--the upgrade price is absurd for the amount of new features and loss of others.
